The Shorthand Awards are your chance to be recognised as we celebrate the best-of-the-best digital stories published on the web in 2021.
We’ve already received some amazing entries so far, but we know there are plenty more to come. If you haven’t nominated any stories yet, don’t worry — there’s time! The deadline is January 28, 2022.
Once entries close, our team will work hard to whittle down a long list of outstanding nominations to a special shortlist. This then goes to our expert judging panel who will deliberate and decide on our category winners. Read on to meet the judges.
Meet the judges
This year, we’ve enlisted the help of 8 storytelling experts — including judges from previous years and some brand new faces — to have the all-important final say.
Freelance journalist and author — returning judge
Chris is a freelance journalist who has written for The Economist, Wired, New Scientist, and The New York Times. He is the author of YouTubers: How YouTube Shook Up TV and Created a New Generation of Stars, published in May 2019, and TikTok Boom: China, the US and the Superpower Race for Social Media, published in April 2021. Furthermore, he wrote the launch longform story for BuzzFeed News back in 2012.
Dr Caroline Graham
Award-winning journalist and academic — new judge
Caroline is the co-writer and co-producer of true crime podcast documentary Lost in Larrimah, which won a Walkley Award, and the co-author of Larrimah and Writing Feature Stories: How to research and write articles—from listicles to longform. She has written for a range of publications, including The Guardian, The Australian, The Weekend Australian Magazine, and Australian Women's Weekly.
Freelance content writer and marketer — new judge
Jonathan calls himself a storyteller because freelance writer, editor, content marketer, journalist, copywriter, consultant and speaker wouldn't fit neatly on a business card. Jonathan has won awards for his articles on digital marketing, and has written, edited, or otherwise word-wrangled for brands such as Telstra and Australia Post, and continues to write a regular column on content writing and creativity for CCO magazine, published by the Content Marketing Institute.
Vice President of Global Content Marketing at iCor — new judge
Bernie wears many hats. As Vice President of Global Content Marketing at iQor, Bernie focuses on the planning and execution of the content strategy to amplify the iQor brand. He is also a podcaster, a voiceover actor, and is co-founder, advisor, and board member at Vengreso.
Vice President of Brand and Content Marketing at WilsonHCG — new judge
As Vice President of Brand and Content Marketing, Meghan leads a global team of creative professionals. With 15 years experience in marketing and leadership, she is responsible for the organisation’s brand management, creative direction, and content strategy.
Chief Marketing Officer at Wunder — returning judge
Scott oversees marketing and content for Wunder, a social media start-up launching in early 2022. Prior to Wunder, Scott spent seven years at Ogilvy UK as Director of Content, running global content for brands such as Rolls-Royce, Nokia, and Formula 1. Scott has previously spent 20 years as a newspaper and magazine editor and journalist, sitting in the editor’s hot seat for publications as diverse as Loaded and BA’s High Life.
Owner of Megan Fleming Writing & Creative Services — new judge
Megan is a skilled and versatile freelancer, with experience in writing websites, blogs, case studies, articles, and more. She also supports corporate marketing teams with strategic planning, creative thinking, project management, and special events. Megan works with companies and non-profit organisations across the U.S., specialising in healthcare and technology.
