A good donor impact report is an important tool for keeping your supporters informed, connected, and inspired to continue their involvement.

The eight examples below share a few components in common, but each also has unique elements of its own.

First, they introduce the reader to the organisation — its people, work, and goals. A message from a CEO or chairperson offers the chance to thank current donors; and some brilliant photography or video of the organisation’s staff or volunteers helps endear the organisation further.

The reports also present statistics and financial metrics in unique and transparent ways. Some lay it all out in great detail, others just stick to the main figures — things like the number of donors, or total amount raised — before linking away to more detailed results.

This important information is a double-edged sword: A donor report wouldn’t be complete without it, yet it can make a report boring or overly complex.

A visual element is key, so think about whether high-quality infographics can do more of the heavy lifting than pages and pages of graphs.

Finally, great reports celebrate and rely on the stories of the people involved, whether that’s staff and volunteers, or students, or the people in the community these organisations set out to help. Success stories of happy, healthy people, students carrying out important new research, and vibrant community work, prove to the reader that their donations are making a meaningful difference — and make them more likely to continue donating.

Without further ado, here are 8 impact report examples from the organisations getting it right.

Cancer Council Queensland: From coast to country. Here for all Queenslanders

This donor impact report does a brilliant job of laying out the Council's priorities, research funding, and community work; it uses full-width video and images, video embeds, and some fantastic animated infographic icons. As a bonus, it's designed in Cancer Council’s brand colouring, making it a striking piece of comms that reinforces brand affinity.

Purdue for Life Foundation 2024 Impact Report

This report does not go overboard with the figures. It sprinkles various statistics and charts throughout rich imagery of the Foundation’s members and community doing great work, and taking part in fun events.

Instead of ignoring it all to find the detail they’re after, readers are interested enough to scroll through and get a great look back at the year’s initiatives and achievements.

Tommy’s impact report 23/24

This annual report from pregnancy and childbirth charity Tommy’s doesn’t shy away from using numbers to tell the story. After a beautiful title image and short text preamble, it launches into the facts and figures about the amount of people who accessed Tommy’s services, membership numbers, fundraising amounts, business supporters, and more. In large, scrolling text coupled with light-up icons, the statistics are punchy and attention-grabbing. This is certainly an example worth looking at for any charity, institution, or nonprofit hoping to demonstrate their impact by pushing results to the top.

From there, it goes about telling the stories of its people and work, as well as messages from the families it has helped along the way, and ends with some clear and powerful calls to action for readers and new donors.

Telethon 7 Impact Report

This report uses vibrant colour to celebrate what it’s all about: children. The Channel 7 telethon raises funds for 136 different charities helping children in Western Australia.

It combines a few facts and figures, a note from the chairperson, some great emotional appeal via fun shots of kids benefitting from its work, and that’s it. One of the strongpoints of this page is its brevity;  instead of compiling everything on one page, it acts as a hub, linking out to other pages for information such as stats and facts, and trustees and partners.

The University of Manchester: Your Impact 200

Innovations like a new Cancer Research Facility and the Manchester Museum, and the photos and voices of students, are arranged around videos, calls to action, and a stories of philanthropy from the University’s 200-year history. This makes for a balanced and varied report that never feels repetitive.

Creating change: donor impact stories

University of Queensland’s donor impact report leans heavily on the story angle, offering the reader a glimpse into the work of a roster of students, alumni, and volunteers, as well as updates on new facilities, partnerships, and programs.

It also has a striking approach to delivering the ‘numbers’ side of an annual report.

Charles Darwin University Donor Impact Report 2021

Charles Darwin University’s report paid tribute to the landscapes and rural locations of many of its campuses — think eucalyptus leaves, earthy tones and landscape photography. The result is a visually pleasing, on-brand donor report.

With inspirational stories, original icon designs, and a respect for the original custodians of the lands on which it operates, CDU’s report has a unique human touch.

University of Oxford Saïd Business School: The impact of your giving

This donor impact report features an animated recurring background that reappears throughout, to tie the whole design together. With full-width imagery and oversized headshots of the School’s staff and students, it lays out the stories of the impacts it’s having.

One thing it does that none of the other entries in this listicle do, is name its donors in two big charts at the bottom of the page. While this part wouldn’t be a must-read for all of the audience, it does go to show the organisation values its donors — and would be appreciated by the donors who find their name in the list.
